THE MACC has been urged to investigate the actions of Sarawak’s deputy chief minister who was seen in a video handing out money to hawkers during a visit.

DAP’s Batu Kitang chairman Abdul Aziz Isa said the video, which has since gone viral, should be looked into as he believed Sarawak Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hassan actions violated the law.

The 26-seconds video is believed to have been taken during his recent official visit to Pantai Kuala Matu on March 31.

It was posted on the Facebook page of state assemblyman Datuk Dr Juanda Jaya.

Abdul Aziz asked how the MACC will classify the money given by Awang Tengah to the hawkers.

“Is it considered to be merely a normal buyer-seller relationship? If not, then does it fall under the category of ‘donation’, ‘alms’ or ‘gift’?”

“If it does not fall under these three categories, then can MACC give further clarification?” he asked in a statement today.

Abdul Aziz also took the authorities to task for not acting on Awang Tengah for not following Covid-19 SOPs during his visit there.

In the video, it can be seen that Awang Tengah gave money to the local hawkers without wearing a face mask.

He is seen being escorted by policemen and Rela personnel.

“Why is the Deputy Chief Minister allowed to walk around without a face mask in public? Is there any special treatment in the SOP guidelines which exempts him?

“If so, can the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee clarify to the public on which part of the SOP guidelines exempts a Deputy Chief Minister from wearing a face mask in public?

“If no exemption was given, will SDMC take the necessary action on the Deputy Chief Minister?”

Abdul Aziz also asked if the police and Rela personnel, who escorted him were aware that Awang Tengah took off his face mask.

“If so, did they warn or advise inform the Deputy Chief Minister to follow the SOP guidelines? If not, did the police issue a compound to him?

“If no compound was issued, does it mean that the policemen had breached their duties,” he asked.

He said the authorities need to answer these questions as the public wants to know if different laws exists between the ordinary people and politicians.
