HEAVY rains are expected until Thursday in Sarawak, Sabah and Johor.
The Malaysian Meteorological Department issued a weather alert warning today saying heavy rains can be expected in Kuching, Serian, Samarahan, Sri Aman, Betong, Sarikei, Sibu, Mukah and Kapit.
Heavy rains have already caused flash floods in two districts and a sub-district in central Sarawak in the early hours of today.
Several longhouses and at least one primary school was affected, according to the Vibes.
The districts of Betong and Selangau, and sub-district Ulu Skrang, were most affected.
Rescue personnel in Ulu Skrang reported an emergency call was received from staff of SK Nanga Tebat when the teachers’ quarters were inundated at about 6am.
“Among those rescued is a pregnant woman and her 3-year-old son, ”, according to the Fire Department.
The affected teachers and children were then evacuated to higher ground from their quarters, where floodwaters reached about 0.5m in height.
In Selangau, the longhouse Rumah Gerinsa remains flooded since 11pm last night.
Some 10 people have been evacuated by rescue personnel and taken to nearby longhouses.
In Betong, the Rumah Ijok longhouse was also flooded, with 13 families evacuated.
No injuries or fatalities were reported in all three areas.
