Unimas testing sample to confirm if Delta variant detected in Sibu

THERE is no confirmation yet of the Delta variant being detected in Sibu as samples of a suspected case were still being tested.

Sibu authorities said news that the Delta Covid-19 variant was detected in an Indonesian man in the district was premature and the rumours were stoking fear among the public.

The Sibu Division Disaster Management Committee said an Indonesian man was admitted to Sibu Hospital on July 7 and found positive with Covid-19.

“Test of his samples at the Sibu Hospital could not verify it’s variant. The samples have been sent to Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) in Kuching for further tests,” it said in a statement today.

This comes after state Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian earlier warned that more variants were being discovered in Sarawak, especially Kuching.

He said a total of 76 cases of variants of concern and variants of interest have been detected in Sarawak as of July 4.
