THE Registrar of Societies has said Umno’s decision to postpone its party election is invalid.

Its director-general Jasri Kasim said the decision was based on the minutes of the Umno supreme council meeting on July 7, that agreed to postpone supreme council, division and branch elections.

“The decision (by Umno) is invalid because the term of the supreme council officer bearers for 2018/2021 had ended on June 30,” Jasri said today.

The RoS statement comes after a split in Umno, with party MPs led by Deputy Prime Minister and Umno vice-president Ismail Sabri Yaakob leading a large group in favour of supporting Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin and Perikatan Nasional.

On the other hand, Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi led more than 10 other MPs in withdrawing support for Muhyiddin as decided by delegates at the party’s last annual general assembly.

Umno elections are held every three years, with the last one held on June 30, 2018.

Umno secretary-general Ahmad Maslan had said the postponement would not be for longer than 18 months.
