Triple-digit new Covid-19 cases yesterday not due to Raya travel

THE 172 new Covid-19 infections reported yesterday, the sharpest spike in weeks, is not due to Malaysians travelling back to celebrate the Hari Raya celebrations.

The Heath Ministry said 159 of the cases involved foreigners, of which 112 were traced to three immigration detention depots.

“It had nothing to do with the relaxed restrictions given to certain individuals to make inter-state travel or for Raya. The incubation period for the virus is 14 days and and the effects can only be seen 14 days from now,” the ministry clarified in its Facebook post today.

The ministry further added that the number of positive cases is expected to rise in the next few days, mostly involving foreigners in the immigration detention depots as more tests were being conducted.

It also allayed worries that the virus could spread to Malaysians at large as the detainees were isolated from the public.
