THE Bintulu MP has slammed Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Adham Baba for being indecisive and unprofessional in containing the coronavirus pandemic.
Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing said the shortage of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for healthcare frontliners was one of the bungles by the Health Ministry.
“I understand that the Ministry has claimed that all the equipment must adhere to certain standards set by the country. But, we have never experienced this (dealing Covid-19) before.
“So, the Ministry should have imported the medical equipment and supplies from China, when the outbreak was first identified instead of continuing to put the safety of frontliners at risk,” he told Borneo Post.
“The Minister ‘s ‘drink warm water to kill the virus’ had also dented public confidence in his competence to lead the nation’s healthcare.
“It seems like Health Director-General Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah is working alone and leading the nation’s fight against the Covid-19 pandemic,” said the Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) president.
“I am dismayed to see that it needed Malaysia’s Foreign Minister to request China for help, to which China agreed.
“It should be the Health Ministry holding government-to-government talks with China since day one to seek their medical expertise and support and invited their medical professionals to help us.”
Tiong said he had received numerous public feedback on the risks faced by frontline medical staff working to contain Covid-19.
However, Tiong believed the task of procuring medical protective equipment should not be the Health Ministry’s priority as it should instead focus on containing the spread of the pandemic as quickly as possible.
The National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA), he added, should be responsible for the purchase of medical equipment, resources and securing funding, so as to avoid red tape in the payment approval process.
