SUPP’s Sim told to apologise over “traitor” label on Violet

Pending assemblywoman Violet Yong

PENDING assemblywoman Violet Yong has issued a Letter of Demand to SUPP’s Sim Kiang Chiok over a Facebook posting on Apr 29 that labelled her as a Sarawak traitor.

Her lawyer Michael Kong said the posting was deemed defamatory to Yong and they sought a full withdrawal of the defamatory words and an apology in an English and Chinese newspaper, and also in Facebook.

Kong said they also wanted Sim’s written assurance and undertaking not to further publish any similar statement concerning Yong plus cost.

He said Sim has seven days to reply accordingly, before further action is taken.

“While the freedom of speech is a fundamental constitutional right, such a right must be exercised within the bounds of the law and does not include the right to defame others,” Kong said in statement.
