SARAWAK United People’s Party is against the opening of baking supplies and container shops as Hari Raya Aidilfitri and Gawai festivals approach.
“It is not about the opening of stores but the consequence of making lots of good food, which is naturally followed by the urge to invite people over to enjoy it,” said its Women chief Kho Teck Wan.
“As much as I love our ‘togetherness’ culture, I am against it until we find an effective drug or vaccine for Covid-19 virus,” she said, adding this could be her least popular Facebook post.
If you love your family, forgo Hari Raya and Gawai visit this year. Just bake one cake and enjoy a simple celebration with your family members, she said.
“There is no need to bake for guests. Close your door and save your money. What is the point of celebrating and risk mourning the death of a loved one later?” she added.
Kho advised Sarawakians to be more understanding during this crisis as life is so precious while there is always a chance to have a big celebration in the future.
Yesterday, Sarawak Disaster Management Committee allowed baking supplies shops to resume operations on Wednesdays and Fridays, from 7am to 7pm for housewives and SMEs in the baking business.
