Speed up BKSS payment for petty traders and hawkers, urges DAP

THE Sarawak Government has been urged to expedite the payment of the Sarawakku Sayang Special Assistance (BKSS) 6.0 to petty traders as they were yet to receive them.

Pending assemblywoman Violet Yong said the RM1,500 aid promised to them was nowhere in sight and the state should urgently look into the woes of this vulnerable group.

Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Abang Openg had on May 28 announced that each recipient would get RM1,500 in two payments – RM750 in July and the balance in December.

“It is now July, yet the state government has not come out with any announcement on how soon the money will be disbursed.

“If the government is sincere and intends to help cushion the economic blow from the Covid-19 pandemic on the petty traders and hawkers, there is no reason to further delay the payment of the money to all eligible recipients,” she said in statement today.

“These petty traders and hawkers are among the most vulnerable and have suffered the most due to Covid-19 pandemic.”

The DAP assemblywoman said the State Disaster Management Committee has implemented many strict SOPs for eateries, including shorter business hours, no dine-in, number of customers and workers.

She said many eateries have closed down as they were unable to sustain the losses.

“For those struggling petty traders and hawkers, they are in dire need of this BKSS fund from the state government,” she added.

The state government was also reminded that whatever measures rolled out from the government to assist the people should not be used as a carrot and stick approach to fish for votes for elections as the state polls was due.
