SABAH Chief Minister and Semporna MP Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal will table a motion of confidence in Parliament on ex-PM Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, which if carried through, could see another change of the federal government.

Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Mohamad Ariff M Yusof has confirmed that a letter from Shafie to him, which has gone viral on social media and chat groups, was authentic, Malay Mail reported.

Dated May 1, the motion in the letter states that Langkawi MP, Dr Mahathir, had the majority support of the legislature.

It further added that the motion does not contradict Article 43 of the Federal Constitution, which stipulates that the power to appoint the Prime Minister lies with the King.

Parliament is set to convene on May 18.

If carried through, PM Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin who was sworn in on March 1 with a razor-thin majority, may have to step down, making him the Premier with the shortest-ever stint.

The King could also opt to dissolve the Dewan Rakyat.

But the resolution could run into legal roadblocks as Mohammad Ariff could be sacked and replaced with a Perikatan Nasional-friendly Speaker before the legislature meets. The decision whether to allow motions lies with the Speaker.

Mohammad Ariff was previously from Amanah, a Pakatan Harapan component party, before he quit to take up his current post.
