SARAWAK has recorded 426 new Covid-19 cases today, which is almost one-third of the 1,302 cases reported nationwide.

Health Director-General Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said Sarawak topped the list followed by Selangor with 256 cases.

Other states with new infections include Penang (212), Johor (176), Kuala Lumpur (58), Sabah (38), Kelantan (34), Pahang (32), Perak and Kedah (23 each), Negri Sembilan (nine), Labuan (six), Melaka (five) and Terengganu and Putrajaya with two cases each.

The Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) said that of the 426 new cases, 203 were from Serian of which 191 were traced to the Semuja Immigration Detention Depot.

The cluster is now linked to 462 cases. The depot had 462 detainees of which 433 or 94 per cent, were tested positive.

“This shows that Covid-19 can spread easily when there’s no physical distancing. This is what happened at the Semuja Immigration Detention Depot. As many as 75 detainees were put in one room,” the SDMC said in a statement today.

The SDMC also announced that two new deaths were reported in Sarawak today, bringing the tally to 103.

Cumulatively, 15,869 Covid-19 cases have been reported in the state so far.
