Sarawak churches can hold New Year prayers – Unifor

By S. Harrish

ALL Sarawak churches are allowed to hold services to usher in the New Year but it must end by 10pm on Dec 31.

Sarawak’s Unit for Other Religions (Unifor) director Richard Lon said in a letter to Association of Churches in Sarawak chairman Archbishop Simon Poh yesterday that the government had decided to allow church prayers to welcome the year 2021.

According to a DayakDaily report, he however said all religious activities must end by 10pm as per the standard operating procedure for houses of worship for the prevention of Covid-19.

Lon noted that Sarawak still recorded a number of daily positive cases of Covid-19.

Thus, he said, Unifor seeks the assistance of all churches in Sarawak to remain vigilant and to abide by the SOP set by the State Disaster Management Committee.
