PARTI Sarawak Bersatu will remain as an independent party and only supported Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s bid to be the Prime Minister recently because the party respected the voters who had backed Pakatan Harapan during the last general election.

Its president Datuk Seri Wong Soon Koh said his party’s stance will remain until the next general election.

“PSB will not enter into any alliance with any party as it intends to remain a fully independent multi-racial Sarawak party that will fight for the rights and welfare of all Sarawakians regardless of race or religion,” he said in a statement today.

Recently, PSB backed Anwar as the PM candidate following the resignation of Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin as PM. The opposition head garnered the support of 105 lawmakers, including two from PSB, to Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob’s 114.

Ismail, the Umno vice-president, was sworn in as the country’s ninth PM on Aug 21.

“It does not matter which alliance wins a general election – PSB will always respect the decision of the people. PSB will not sacrifice its principles for political expediency nor will it give flimsy excuses like supporting the losers for the sake of political stability. To PSB, that is simply trying to pull wool over the eyes of the voters,” said Wong, the Bawang Assan assemblyman, who was formerly an ex-senior state cabinet member during the Barisan Nasional administration.
