Problems at Serian welfare department a burden to the people, says DAP

DAP today called on the Ministry of Welfare, Community, Women, Family and Child Development of Sarawak to help solve the problems faced by the Serian District Welfare Department.

According to Brolin Nicholsion, the DAP Serian Branch chairman, there were some cases which were difficult for family members to follow up and check the status of their applications.

He said some have been waiting for years for the status of their applications and there has been no response from the Serian welfare department.

“DAP Serian has seen for themselves and tried to find out what problems they are facing. We found that they do not have a hotline number and it is difficult for the villagers and the people of Serian to follow up on their status.

“We also learnt that some officers use phone numbers that are likely to be their personal numbers and difficult to contact,” said Brolin.

He said the officers communicated through the Ketua Kampong for the cases in villages and most of the villagers were not comfortable with their village heads.

“Also there are some Ketua Kampong who play politics with the applicants,” he added.

Brolin, who is also special assistant to DAP Sawarak chief, Chong Chieng Jen, said there were also many cases from last year that were still pending because the system regularly broke down and this made it difficult for the officers to settle new cases.

Unlike in Kuching, the welfare office there has a hotline to contact and it is easy for applicants to inquire about the status of their applications.

“We call upon the relevant authorities to resolve these problems as soon as possible and to lighten the burdens of the people in these challenging times.

“We are ready to render our assistance to resolve the problems with the welfare department as the wellbeing of the people remains our priority,”
