New Covid-19 cluster in Kuching following meeting in sport association

A TECHNICAL meeting convened by a sport association in Jalan Stadium, Petra Jaya Kuching on Apr 30 has given rise to a new Covid-19 cluster with 17 people infected so far.

The Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC)  said the index case was a 65-year-old man who tested positive on May 5 after showing symptoms of the disease.

“The index case contracted Covid-19 from the community and went on to spread the virus among those who attended the meeting and their family members,” the SDMC added in a statement.

In total, 55 people were tested and 17 tested positive and they had been admitted to the Sarawak General Hospital for treatment. The cluster has been named “Stadium Negeri”.

The 17 were among the 454 new Covid-19 cases reported in Sarawak today, with the tally now at 35,160 cases.

Most of the cases were reported in Sibu (72), followed by Bintulu (65), Miri (59), Pakan (41), Sarikei (36), Kuching (35), Meradong (30), Selangau (24), Kanowit (16), Serian (14), Pusa (11) and Kapit (10).

The SDMC also announced that six foreigners were arrested in Kuching for visiting a crowded bistro which did not observe Covid-19 standard operating procedure, including physical distancing. Three of the detainees were from Brunei, with the remaining one each from Sudan, Yemen and Bangladesh.

Meanwhile, Health Director-General Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah disclosed that 3,733 new Covid-19 infections were reported nationwide today, pushing the national tally to 440,677. This case following two consecutive days of new cases breaching the 4,000-mark.

There were also 26 new deaths reported, with the death toll now at 1,683. Meanwhile, 416 Covid-19 patients are in intensive care unit wards nationwide, of whom 216 require ventilation support.
