FOURTEEN new Covid-19 infections were reported nationwide today with two of them being in Sarawak.
The Health Department also announced a new cluster dubbed the “Kuching Engineering Cluster” with two cases so far.
The department said that of the 14, 11 were local transmissions and the rest were imported cases.
Among the local transmissions, eight involved foreigners while three are locals. The total number of cases is now at 8,718.
There were no new deaths and death toll remains at 122.
Meanwhile, the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) said the 578th case in the state involved a local 44-year-old woman who tested positive for the virus although she showed no symptoms of the disease.
The woman has been admitted to the Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) isolation ward and the authorities are actively tracing her close contacts and the source of transmission.
The other case is from the new cluster and a close contact of an earlier case.
The male patient was also asymptomatic and has been admitted to the SGH for isolation and treatment.
The Sarawak State Health Department is now actively identifying all close contacts and conducting contact tracing for Covid-19 screening to be done.
SDMC said the cluster was first detected on July 7 through the earlier case.
In that case, the patient had dry cough symptoms since June 27 but only sought treatment on July 7 after complaining of shortness of breath and chest pain.
She works as a draughtswoman at the engineering firm and so far, 15 of her close contacts have been identified. The new case is from one of those contacts.
Close contact tracing is still ongoing involving all staff at the engineering form as well as her family members.
SDMC has also urged those that have been in close contact with the positive cases to voluntarily go for screening at one of the five designated government health clinics in Kuching.
