Miring ceremony during Gawai sparks new Covid-19 cluster

NINE villagers in Lundu tested positive for Covid-19 after a miring ceremony during a pre-Gawai celebration on May 31, involving a village in Kampung Sebandi Hilir.

The Kampung Sebandi Hilir cluster saw 34 people screened, of whom 25 tested negative for Covid-19, the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) said in a statement.

The cluster is among the three new ones declared in the state today, which also saw 569 new infection, or a total of 54,899 cases.

The other clusters were Melatai in Kapit and Kampung Tabuan Haji Drahman in Kuching. The former which saw 45 infections, was sparked by social visits during Gawai . The latter was a communal cluster also involving social visits, and has seen 33 cases so far.

There were also four new deaths reported in the state, bringing the total to 346.

The four were part of the 76 deaths reported nationwide today, with the death toll now at 3,844.

Health Director-General Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said in a statement that 5,793 new infections were reported over the past 24 hours from noon today.

The total number of infections now stands at 652,204.

There are 76,247 active cases, with 459 of them being treated in intensive care and 914 requiring respiratory assistance.

Selangor recorded the highest number of cases with 1,582.

This was followed by Negeri Sembilan (618), Sarawak (569), Kuala Lumpur (559), Johor (504), Sabah (378), Kelantan (337), Labuan (25), Perak (218), Penang (198), Melaka (178), Kedah (171), Pahang (121), Terengganu (82), Putrajaya (23), and Perlis (5).
