DEPUTY Chief Minister Tan Sri James Masing has been appointed as the acting chairman for the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee, with immediate effect until Dec 17.

The state cabinet made the decision in a meeting two days ago, as the committee chairman Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas is on a one month medical leave. Uggah had a minor surgical procedure on Nov 17, and he is currently recuperating.

Masing, who is also the state’s Infrastructure and Port Development Minister, in a statement said all the committee members and relevant agencies were told to tighten the border security, to ensure no illegal visitors can cross the border into Sarawak to contain the spread of Covid-19 and for security purposes.

He said the committee will meet on Sunday to decide on the status of the Conditional Movement Control Order in Kuching and if it will be extended or ended.

“It will also take into consideration the number of new cases in the past two days,” he said.
