The Health Ministry in a statement said the 51-year-old man was admitted to the Sarawak General Hospital on Aug 26 after suffering back pain for three days.
He also experienced vomiting and had a seizure before visiting the hospital.
Preliminary investigations were unable to determine if the victim had any history of dog or other animal bites. However, he was confirmed infected with the virus through laboratory tests conducted by the Institute of Medical Research (IMR) on Sept 4.
“He did keep a cat and a dog as pets, which were not vaccinated. However, the animals were kept in the house compound. The two animals are still good and there is no change in their behaviour thus far,” said in statement.
With the new case, Sarawak a total of 25 rabies cases since July 2017, including 24 deaths.
