INCREASING number of housing development projects at Jalan Field Force have caused the flooding problem in the area to worsen.
Pending assemblywoman, Violet Yong said this problem in the area, off Jalan Batu Kawa was made worse due to poor drainage.
“The affected residents are very disappointed with the lackadaisical attitude of the authorities for failing to address the issue effectively and promptly.
“The authorities concerned including the Ministry of Local Government, the Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) Sarawak, Public Works Department (PWD) Sarawak and the Padawan Municipal Council are fully aware of the root cause and severity of the problem,” she said.
Yet, she said, there is no concerted effort from them to ensure a proper and effective drainage system is built to handle the water discharge.
The flash flood occurs at the area between Lorong Field Force No. 2 and Lorong Field Force No. 4 whenever there is heavy downfall.
“Rainwater from the army camp area will flow down towards the direction of Lorong Field Force No. 4 before passing through private land and discharging into Sungai Maong Kanan.
“Affected residents said over the years, whenever the flash flood issue is brought up to the attention of the relevant authorities, it will be kicked about between the DID Sarawak, PWD Sarawak, Padawan Municipal Council and their appointed contractor,” she said.
She said the residents are helpless as their calls for help have fallen on deaf ears.
“I urge Dr Sim Kui Hian as the Minister of Local Government to be more proactive in his role to ensure DID Sarawak, Padawan Municipal Council and other relevant agencies under his ministry take immediate action to implement a proper drainage system at Jalan Field Force, Batu Kawa. This is long overdue to resolve the flash flood issue,” stressed Violet.
As a Minister responsible for the portfolio, he should be more attentive to people’s woes rather than letting the aggravated flash flood problem remain unresolved year after year.
As a short term measure, she said the Padawan Municipal Council should carry out clearing works at the existing stream crossing the private land near Lorong Field Force No. 4 which is one of the responsibilities prescribed under the Local Authorities Ordinance, 1994.
This will help increase the rate of the water outflow.
