SENIOR Umno Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob has been appointed as the Deputy Prime Minister with immediate effect.

The Prime Minister’s Office said in a statement today that Ismail Sabri will also continue to be the Defence Minister.

Meanwhile, Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein will now be Senior Foreign Minister, and head the Security Cluster, which was held by Ismail Sabri.

The statement said that Ismail Sabri’s appointment will help Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin to manage the country’s administration and fulfil the needs of the people in the health and economic crisis facing the country.

“The Prime Minister also agreed for Hishammuddin to help him in the implementation of the National Recovery Plan (NRP).

“The Yang di-Pertuan Agong has been notified of both appointments which are effective immediately,” the statement said.

PMO said that the appointments will increase the Perikatan Nasional government’s ability, particularly in handling the Covid-19 pandemic, fostering unity among parties that form the government, and strengthen the PN government to be transparent and corruption-free.

The appointment comes as there is said to be a plan for Umno to withdraw its support for the PN government.

However several Umno MPs, including ministers, are against the plan to sever ties with PN.
