RESIDENTS of the KMC flats in Padungan, Kuching have expressed concern over the hygiene standards at the Sebuyau and Dalat blocks.

According to Julian Tan, this was due to the improper disposal of trash from the residents.

“Based on feedback, daily, some irresponsible tenants staying on the upper floors throw rubbish out the back windows.

“One can imagine the stench and unhygienic conditions encountered by those staying on the ground and lower floors,” said the special assistant to Sarawak DAP chairman, Chong Chieng Jen.

Because of the rubbish on the ground floor, residents not only have to endure the stench, but also rats and cockroaches.

Julian, along with Bandar Kuching MP, Dr Kelvin Yii and members of the DAP Socialist Youth (Dapsy) Kuching lead by Anthony Chin visited the residents recently.

Julian said the built it rubbish chutes were underutilised, and the skip bin was too small to cater to all the rubbish from six floors.

He said cooperation from all the tenants was vital to overcome the said issues.

“Some other suggestion includes initiative by MBKS to organise dialogues with the residents of affected blocks.

“Increasing awareness and organising clean campaigns or even competitions are important to overcome this problem,” he said.

Other technical aspects include setting up collection points at strategic locations and replacing the skip bin with a bigger one.
