THE Sibu Muncipal Council (SMC) has been asked to confirm on the status of the plan to renovate and upgrade Tiong Hua Market.

Bukit Assek assemblywoman Irene Chang said by Sept 26 this year, the market would have been closed for a year with the 34 traders who used to operate there displaced.

“I have now received information that the plan for Tiong Hua Market is to relocate it permanently to the site opposite Doremart Supermarket at Chew Siik Hiong Road.

“Indeed, I went there this morning to personally inspect the site and saw that there is an ongoing construction. However, there is no sign at the site to confirm on the building/structure to be constructed at the site. I therefore call on SMC to confirm if the information by nearby shopowners and their employees and customers that the ongoing construction at the site is for the permanent relocation of Tiong Hua Market is true.” she said in a statement.

She also called on SMC to update ratepayers on the status of renovation/construction of Tiong Hua Market.

While the possible new location was strategic, Chang called on SMC to look into traffic congestion should the market be moved to the new site.
