FEDERAL Court judge Tan Sri Idrus Harun has been appointed as the new Attorney General with immediate effect, replacing Tan Sri Tommy Thomas who quit from on Feb 28.
According to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office, the King has consented to the appointment.
“The King has consented to Thomas’ request to cut his tenure short on Feb 28. The government thanks him for his service,” said the statement.
Meanwhile, FMT reported that another ex-Federal Court judge Gopal Sri Ram lauded Idrus’s appointment.
“This man will maintain the credibility and integrity of the AG’s office,” Sri Ram said.
He said Idrus was honest and was very independent in discharging his duties.
The portal also quoted Malaysian Bar president Abdul Fareed Abdul Gafoor as saying that Idrus’ wide experience and exposure, made him the right man for the new job.
“The Bar believes he will be able to carry out his duties efficiently and effectively to uphold the rule of law without fear or favour,” he added.
