HITZ Sarawak has suspended one of its radio announcers for mocking a teacher in a video that has gone viral and drew heavy criticisms.
Astro Radio East Malaysia general manager Hafiz Nizamuddin posted on the station’s official Facebook page that an internal inquiry would also be held.
“HITZ is committed to entertain and inform Malaysians, and sincerely apologize for the bad judgement call by one of our radio announcers towards a recent video that went viral.
“We take this matter seriously, and will be launching an internal inquiry into this. In the meantime, this announcer will be suspended from his duties on-air,” Hafiz said.
The announcer had also posted a video on his own Facebook page to apologise for the “disrespectful” and “distasteful” clip he had made on video sharing platform Tik Tok.
In the controversial video which has since been deleted, the radio announcer mocked the Science teacher, for the latter’s purported poor pronunciation and demeanour.
The teacher had appeared on DidikTV, a free-to-air television station launched by PM Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin earlier this week. The programmes broadcasted by the station was meant to help students catch up with their studies following the closure of schools due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
It was earlier reported that many students in Sarawak and Sabah, especially in the rural areas, could not attend online classes due to lack of digital devices like mobile phones or tablets and poor Internet connectivity.
