Health Dept confirms Covid-19 detected at two Sibu nursing homes

THE Sarawak Health Department has confirmed there are Covid-19 cases detected at two nursing homes in Sibu.

Department director, Dr Chin Zin Hing said those who tested positive have since been admitted, while close contacts have been quarantined.

“We are carrying our Covid-19 tests on the elderly at the two homes now. The cluster will be announced today as we must check with the ministry first,” he said.

He said the source of the infections he said he was not sure if the cases at the homes were linked to the Pasai Cluster as investigations are still ongoing.

A total 31 senior citizens from the two elderly care centres in Sibu had since been transferred to the Sibu Hospital for quatantine this morning.

Sarawak Police Commissioner, Datuk Aidi Ismail said the action followed the death of an elderly at one of the homes.

He said the victim, a 73-year-old man was confirmed positive for Covid-19 and died at the nursing home he was in.

The rest of the elderly at the home went for a swab test on Feb 13 and were found positive the following day.

Following the death of the man, 18 residents from the nursing home were taken to hospital, while another 13 elderly from a nearby home were also taken to the Sibu Hospital.
