THE retail ceiling price of three-ply face masks is expected to be further lowered than the current RM1 each as there’s enough supply of the items in the country.

Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Alexander Nanta Linggi told the Dewan Rakyat today that a review of the current ceiling price would be made in the next two months.

Nanta was responding to to Cha Kee Chin (PH-Rasah) who had asked if the RM1 ceiling price for the three-ply face masks would be gradually lowered eventually.

Alexander said previously, there were only six face mask manufacturers but there are now 10 producing 1.5 million masks per day. Four more plants are expected to begin operations in October.

The three-ply face masks were first priced at RM2 per piece on March 18, before it was lowered to RM 1.50 on March 27. On July 23, the price was further reduced to RM1.20 and on Aug 11 to RM1 per piece.

Ex-Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Deputy Minister Chong Chieng Jen has been one of the strong advocate for the government to reduce the prices of face masks.
