Fed Gov may ask King for emergency in Sarawak to delay polls

THE Federal government may request the King to declare emergency only in Batu Sapi and Sarawak in order to delay the polls there.

De facto law minister Datuk Takiyuddin Hassan said the federal government could consider this proposal and that it was in line with the Federal Constitution.

Takiyuddin said this in Parliament when responding to a question from Hassan Karim (PH-Pasir Gudang) who asked if the government plans to have an audience with the King again to request for an emergency to be declared only in certain areas such as Batu Sapi and Sarawak.

According to a FreeMalaysiaToday report, Takiyuddin said Article 150 of the constitution states that the King had the power to declare an emergency over the whole country or a part of it.

The Batu Sapi by-election will be held on Dec 5 while the Sarawak state election must be held by June next year. However in light of the resurgence of Covid-19 cases after the Sabah election, many have called for the polls to be postponed.
