BANDAR Kuching MP Dr Kelvin Yii has urged the federal and Sarawak governments to also provide discounts and rebates for domestic electricity bills, similar to the ones given to West Malaysian users.
He said that he had received feedback from Sarawakians that their domestic power bills had soared during the Movement Control Order (MCO) as they were confined to their homes to curb the spread of Covid-19.
Dr Yii added that while he welcomed the announcement today that RM942 million in discounts and rebates, they were only for West Malaysia users only.
“While such incentives is good, I question why the Federal Government did not initiate discussions with other State-owned Utility Companies such as Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) to also extend such financial aid to Sarawak as well, so that all Malaysians even those living in Sabah or Sarawak can also enjoy such benefit?” he posted on his social media.
He added that he had aided a few members of the public who complained about soaring power bills during the MCO. They were asked to produce snapshots of their actual consumption at their premises’ meter.
“Even so, in general, many are also burdened with higher bills as the usage of electricity for most families have also soared due to being confined at home during the MCO period. That is why it would not be fair to Sabahans or Sarawakians to also miss out on this incentive that can help ease their financial burdens especially during this tough time,” he added.
Today, Energy and Natural Resources Minister Datuk Dr Shamsul Anuar Nasarah announced that Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) would offer additional discounts on electricity bills.
Four million domestic consumers with electricity consumption of 300 kWh and below per month would enjoy free electricity for April, May and June 2020.
Domestic consumers with consumption of more than 300 kWh per month over the same period would get a discount of RM77 per month.
