THE King has declared an emergency in Gerik, Perak and Bugaya, Sabah, to postpone the by-elections for the two constituencies, initially scheduled for Jan 16, 2021.

Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said in a statement today that the King had consented to the declaration under the provisions of Article 150 (1) of the Federal Constitution.

The new dates for the by-elections will be announced later.

Muhyiddin said the Cabinet had on Dec 4 discussed the consequences of holding the by-elections at a time when Covid-19 cases were still rising.

“Learning from the Covid-19 outbreak after the Sabah elections, the Cabinet felt that the by-elections must be avoided,” he said.

The King had previously made a similar proclamation of emergency for Batu Sapi, cancelling the by-election set for Dec 5.
