POLICE have detained eight people, including six women, for taking part in a zumba session in a gym in Sibu yesterday despite the Movement Control Order (MCO).

Sibu OCPD Asst Comm Stanley Jonathan Ringgit said the police, acting on a tip-off, visited the gym along Jalan Salim yesterday at around 12.15pm, The Star reported.

“When the team arrived, they had to call several times before the gate was opened for them to enter, ” he said.

He added that the team found two men and six women who were then in the middle of exercising.

“Besides ignoring the presence of the police team, the suspects were not cooperative as they questioned the need for the raid, ” he said.

ACP Stanley said the suspects were subsequently arrested and sent to the Lanang police station.

He added that the case was being investigated under Section 186 of the Penal Code for obstructing civil servants from discharging their duty and also under Regulation 6 (1) of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases (Measures Within the Infected Local Areas) (No.3) 2020.
