THE Sarawak government has been told to expedite the Covid-19 vaccination for those aged between 12 and 17 soon.

Ex-Stampin MP Julian Tan said this cohort should be allowed to receive their jabs as long as they are accompanied by adults who had been fully vaccinated.

He added that the number of people receiving the inoculation at vaccination centres had reduced and the government should make use of the excess capacity to administer jabs on the young ones as quickly as possible.

“I laud the high vaccination rate in Sarawak, and the government’s plans to vaccinate the young. However, I also agreed that we should not be complacent.

“While data shows that vaccines are highly effective in preventing severe cases, it underscores the risk that even those vaccinated could be contagious,” he said in a statement today.

He added that almost 29% of Sarawakians comprise of those aged 18 and below and getting them vaccinated will accelerate the effort to combat the pandemic.
