Dewan Rakyat Speaker removed – by two votes

THE Dewan Rakyat today approved a motion to remove Speaker Tan Sri Mohamad Ariff Md Yusof, with 111 yays to 109 nays, in a vote that reflects PM Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s fragile hold on power.

One MP was absent in the 222-member House, while Deputy Speaker Datuk Mohd Rashid Hasnon who is also lawmaker from Batu Pahat, and had presided over the motion, did not vote.

The House will vote later today on whether to accept the appointment of Ariff’s replacement, Datuk Azhar Azizan Harun later today.

It will also decide replacing deputy speaker Nga Kor Ming with Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said.

The motion to replace Ariff was debated by two representatives each from the government bench and the Opposition. Datuk Nik Muhammad Zawawi Salleh (Pasir Putih) and Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim (Arau) debated the motion while Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim (Port Dickson) and Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamed (Langkawi) spoke for the opposition.

The heated debate, was interspersed with shouting matches from both sides.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Takiyuddin Hassan, when winding up the debate affirmed that Azhar’s removal was in accordance with the law.
