Covid-19: Record number of new cases in Sarawak

SARAWAK registered its highest ever daily tally of new Covid-19 cases with 353 infections.

It is the first time the figure has crossed the 300 mark. The previous high was recorded on Jan 24 with 255 infections.

State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) said Sibu had the most number of new cases with 181 infections, followed by Meradong (67), Kuching (31), Bintulu (22), Kapit (18), Miri (8), Subis (8), Betong (6), Bau (3), Dalat (3), Samarahan (2), Kanowit (1), Saratok (1), Julau (1) and Serian (1).

This brings the total number of cases in the state to 8,650 cases while the death toll remains at 76.

SDMC said seven of the 25 active Covid-19 clusters in Sarawak recorded new cases today.

The Sungai Bakong Cluster in Meradong had 65 cases, followed by the Emperoh Jambu Cluster in Kuching with 31 cases, the Gelong Cluster in Kapit with 14 cases, the Jalan Muhhibah Cluster in Betong with five cases, and one case each for the Geronggang Cluster in Sibu; Kampung Sungai Maong Cluster in Kuching and Pasai Cluster in Sibu.

The Sungai Bakong Cluster now has 122 cases, the Emperoh Jambu Cluster in Kuching has 101 cases, the Gelong Cluster in Kapit has 105 cases and the Jalan Muhhibah Cluster in Betong has 23 cases.

SDMC said the Pasai Cluster remains the largest cluster in Sarawak with 2,649 cases, with about 40,000 people screened.

Meanwhile, the Health Ministry reported 3,545 Covid-19 cases and 12 deaths nationwide in the past 24 hours.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said there were 3,331 recoveries, bringing the total number of discharges to 260,009.

Total number of infections now stands at 291,774, with active cases rising the first time in 13 days to 30,677.

There are 189 patients in ICU, with 88 on respirators.

The 12 deaths bring the number of fatalities to 1,088.

Eleven of them are Malaysians. The youngest is a 52-year-old foreigner while the oldest is a 98-year-old woman.

Eight of them are suffering from other medical conditions.

Negeri Sembilan detected the highest number of infections today with 1,392 cases.

It is mainly due to the Industri Sungai Gadut cluster that recorded 1,338 new cases today, for a total of 1,432 cases.

The cluster is linked to a factory at Sungai Gadut Industrial Park, Seremban, where targeting screening began finding Covid-19 cases on Feb 16.

Selangor had 581 cases, Kuala Lumpur (381), Sarawak (353), Johor (318), Perak (188), Sabah (105), Penang (95), Kelantan (53), Malacca (26), Terengganu (22), Kedah (17), Pahang (8), Labuan (5) and Putrajaya (1).

No cases were recorded in Perlis.
