THE Health Ministry today recorded 287 new Covid-19 cases, the highest ever in the country. All are local infections, with the total cases now at 11,771.

Kedah has overtaken Sabah as the top source of new infections, chalking 129 to the latter’s 113 cases, Health Director-General Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said.

Of the 129 in Kedah, 128 were from the Tembok cluster, which involved a prison. The remaining case is a close contact of a confirmed patient.

Selangor reported 31 new cases, while Perak and Terengganu had three cases each. Kelantan and Negeri Sembilan recorded two cases each, and one case was reported in Johor, Kuala Lumpur, Pahang, and Labuan. Sarawak recorded zero new cases today.

A total of 20 cases in Peninsular Malaysia were returnees from Sabah.

Malaysia’s highest daily infections before this was on June 4 where 277 cases were reported.

“The rise in cases is in line with the global trend which has also seen rising number of positive cases and deaths,” Dr Noor Hisham added.
