Covid-19: One new death in Sarawak, longhouse cluster declared

SARAWAK has recorded one new death due to Covid-19, involving a 77-year-old man who died in Sibu Hospital, bringing the total fatalities in the state to 81.

The Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) said the victim tested positive on Feb 13 and his condition deteriorated since. The deceased had also suffered from high blood pressure and strike prior to this.

The SDMC also announced that 255 new cases were reported today, including 27 from a new cluster, Buloh, in Selangau which involved three longhouses there.

The index case was a 32-year-old local woman who tested positive after showing symptoms.

“The disease was spread through close contact among the residents in the longhouses,” the SDMC added.

Other positive cases were detected in the Sibu District (106), , Miri (26), Kapit (22), Bintulu (13), Kuching (12), Betong (11), Kanowit (9), Sri Aman (8), Dalat (5), Bukit Mabong (5), Bau (4), Pusa (2), Saratok (2), Meradong (1), Sarikei (1) and Subis (1).

This brings the total number of cases in Sarawak to 9,374 cases.

Today, 242 Covid-19 patients had been discharged, with the total recoveries now at 6,862 or 73.2 per cent.

Meanwhile, 2,364 new Covid-19 cases were reported nationwide, with the total now at 298,315 cases.

The Health Ministry said 10 Covid-19 deaths were also reported, with 190 patients in intensive care units, of whom 99 required respiratory support.
