Covid-19: New cluster from Miri mall sees 50 infections

A NEW Covid-19 cluster has been declared in Miri today, involving a mall in the city, with 51 infections including the index case, a local 45-year-old woman who works there.

The Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) said the index case of the new Jalan Merpati cluster experienced Covid-19 symptoms on March 3 and was confirmed positive four days later.

“Following further investigations and screening of her close contact, including family members, 50 more positive cases were detected,” the SDMC said in a statement today.

All 51 have been referred to the Miri Hospital and Miri Low Risk Quarantine Centre (PKRC) for further monitoring.

The 51 are part of the 225 new cases detected in Sarawak today, bringing the tally in the state to 13,110.

The Miri district recorded 88 cases, followed by Kuching (32), Bintulu (30), Serian (18), Sibu (13), Sri Aman (12),
Kapit (11), Meradong (7), Bukit Mabong (5), Betong (4), Samarahan (4), and Song (1).

Sarawak ranks second in the number of new Covid-19 infections today, with Selangor topping the list at 499.

Nationwide, 1,219 new cases were reported, with the cumulative cases now at 327,253. Two new deaths were also reported, both from Sabah with the death toll now at 1,220.
