Covid-19: Active cases more than 6,000 in the country

THE number of active Covid-19 cases in the country breached the 6,000 mark as 629 new cases were reported today.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said there were also six deaths today bringing the death toll to 176.

He said the total number of infections in the country is now at 18,758 cases with the number of active cases standing at 6,323.

Ninety-nine of them are in intensive care units, with 31 requiring respirators.

Of the 629 new cases, only two were imported cases.

He said five of the six deaths today involved Malaysians, between the ages of 39 and 74, all of whom passed away in Sabah.

The other fatality involved a 52-year-old foreign national who died at the University Malaya Medical Centre in Kuala Lumpur.

Sabah again recorded the most number of cases with 489, followed by Selangor (50) and Penang (33).

A total of 19 cases were reported in Labuan, with Kuala Lumpur, Perak, Johor, Melaka and Putrajaya each having fewer than 10 cases.

There were no new cases in Sarawak today.
