Communal slaughtering of pigs in Meradong longhouse sparks Gawai cluster

A COMMUNAL effort among residents of a longhouse in Meradong to slaughter pigs in preparations for Gawai has given birth to a new Covid-19 cluster there, with 28 positive cases so far.

The Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) in a statement today said the event happened on May 27. The cluster has been named Skim B.

The committee said 78 individuals were screened and 45 were found negative and five still awaiting lab results.

All positive cases have been referred to the Sarikei Hospital and district’s Covid-19 Low Risk Quarantine Centre for treatment and observations.

The 28 cases from the cluster is among the 651 new cases reported in Sarawak today, bringing the cumulative to 50,571.

The SDMC also announced that Telang Usan is now a Covid-19 “yellow” district following the discovery of nine new cases there, leaving the state with zero “green zones” now.

Sarawak also reported two new deaths over the past 24 hours from noon today, involving a 62-year-old woman who was brought in dead and and a 65-year-old woman from Miri. The total death due to Covid-19 in Sarawak is now 318.

Meanwhile, the Health Ministry reported 7,452 new Covid-19 cases today, with Selangor at 2,509 followed by Negeri Sembilan (843), Kuala Lumpur (678), Sarawak (651),  Johor (412) and Penang (370).
