THREE siblings and their grandmother were killed in a fire at a provisions shop at Kampung Dit in Debak, near Betong early today.
The charred remains of the sisters, aged 6, 10 and 23, were found near that of their 60-year-old grandmother.
A Sarawak Fire Operations Centre spokesperson said members from the Betong Fire and Rescue Station arrived at the scene at around 3.41am after receiving a report at about 2.47am, the NST reported.
Rescuers took “quite some time” to reach the site, due to poor telecommunications connectivity in the district. Worse still, the route to the location was narrow and there were vehicles parked along the road shoulders.
Upon arriving at the site, firemen found that the single-storey provision store-cum house was completely destroyed.
“No extinguishing operation was carried out because the fire was successfully doused by villagers.
“The four victims were trapped and could not save themselves,” he said in a statement today, adding that the remains were handed over to the police for further action.
