A BERSATU deputy minister said he is willing to quit Perikatan Nasional and return to Pakatan Harapan if doing so will enhance unity in the party.

Deputy Works Minister Datuk Shahruddin Md Salleh’s statement is set to further fuel speculations of defections that will undermine PM Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s razor-thin hold hold in Parliament.

“If I have to resign as deputy works minister, I will do so to strengthen Bersatu. As the first secretary-general of the party, I am familiar with division chiefs as well as the women’s and youth wings,” said Shahruddin.

His statement was posted on Bersatu Youth chief Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman’s Facebook page.

“If I have to leave my friends in Perikatan Nasional and return to Pakatan Harapan and by doing so,  Bersatu will become stronger, I will do it!” he added.

Shahruddin also questioned the party’s decision to revoke the membership of four of the party’s MPs, including its chairman Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad Mohamad.

Last week, Shahruddin was rumoured to be one of the two MPs from Bersatu who would cross over to support Dr Mahathir. who had labelled the Muhyiddin administration as a “backdoor government”.

The other MP was Minister in the PM’s Department Datuk Mohd Redzuan Md Yusof, but he has since denied the speculations and openly backed Muhyiddin.
