FORMER Senior Minister for International Trade and Industry Datuk Seri Azmin Ali is likely to be the country’s next Deputy Prime Minister, according to various media reports.
Bersatu sources told Malaysiakini that a deal has been struck for Azmin, one of the main architects of the “Sheraton Move”, to hold the position.
The Gombak MP, who is said to hold sway over at least 10 other former PKR MPs, is said to have threatened to withdraw support for PM Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, if not appointed to the post.
Ismail holds a four-seat majority in the Dewan Rakyat following the resignation of his predecessor Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin on Aug 16.
However, Datuk Seri Zuraida Kamaruddin, a staunch Azmin ally, has refuted claims that Azmin had threatened to withdraw support.
Meanwhile, the Malay Mail reported that Bersatu had agreed to nominate Azmin for the DPM post.
It is said that appointing a Bersatu nominee for the post is among the conditions for the party’s backing for Ismail.
A source told the portal that it is suggested that Azmin also hold the Finance portfolio in Cabinet.
