Allow hybrid meetings for parliament select committees, urges Dr Yii

By S. Harrish

PARLIAMENT should allow the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) and Parliamentary Select Committee meetings to be held in a hybrid manner, to reduce travelling during the pandemic.

PAC chairman Wong Kah Woh and Health, Science and Innovation select committee chairman Dr Kelvin Yii said this has been conveyed to Dewan Rakyat Speaker Datuk Azhar Azizan Harun.

They said in a statement that the Speaker had the power to allow hybrid meetings due to travel limitations caused by the pandemic.

However, if Azhar felt he did not have the authority to allow it, they called on him to allow a motion to hold hybrid meetings to be submitted for debate in the current Parliamentary sitting.

The relevant parts of the parliament Standing Orders state that meetings must be within the Parliamentary premises.

Yii, who is the Bandar Kuching MP, said it made no sense for him to fly from Kuching to KL and be quarantined every time he flew back.

In a separate Facebook posting, he added that hybrid meetings would also be more convenient for civil servants to brief them constantly, without the need to travel all the time to Parliament and doing all the necessary swabs.
