THE Health Ministry today recorded eight new Covid-19 cases, including five from the memorial-cum-prayer service cluster in Kedah which is now linked to 63 cases in two states.

Health Director-General Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said this brings the total number of Covid-19 cases in Malaysia to 9,257.

He added that 2,942 people had been screened from the Tawar cluster, including 198 still waiting for test results, from Kedah and Penang.

The cluster was first traced to a local businessman who developed fever and complained of chest pain on Aug 8, eight days after attending the two-day memorial-cum-prayer service for a recently deceased.

It was reported that the event was attended by an estimated 30 people.

Besides the five local transmission cases today, Dr Noor Hisham said the remaining three were all import cases from Bangladesh, the Netherlands, and the Philippines.

Eight Covid-19 patients are currently in intensive care units, of whom four require respiratory support.

He also reported that four patients had been discharged over the past 24 hours, with the cumulative cases at 8,949, or a recovery rate of 96.7 per cent.
