A total of illegal immigrants were nabbed at a construction site in the Sarawak General Hospital vicinity yesterday.

Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) said in a statement said a multi-agency Covid-19 operation was activated started at 3pm yesterday, after two illegal immigrants from Indonesia tested positive for the virus.

The agency involved 150 personnel were from the SDMC, Health department, Immigration Department and Construction Industry Development Industry and the police.

“We have taken swift action to investigate and check the premises to contain the situation. All the workers were swabbed for Covid-19 and quarantined,” the committee said.

SDMC stressed that parties that break the law and the standard operating procedures will be investigated thoroughly.

The two Indonesian men had entered the state via jalan tikus on Oct 12 and did not undergo the mandatory 14-day quarantine. They were tested positive for Covid-19 at a private hospital on Oct 14.

Meanwhile, Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian said action must be taken against authorities and employers involved in “smuggling” the illegal immigrants into the state.

“It’s time to not just to arrest foreigners but our own black sheep among government officers or employers who putĀ  Sarawakian lives at risk of getting infected due to their irresponsible action,” he wrote on his Facebook page.

“All the costs of enforcement operations and medical expenses should be charged to the employers rather than borne by the public.
We need to strengthen our border security, road blocks, while multi-agencies and the communities need to act as the eyes and ears of the government – to report to the police if they notice any suspicious foreigners,” he said.
