FORTY healthcare workers who have been fully vaccinated for Covid-19 have contracted the virus, underlying the need to retain the standard operating procedure (SOPs) to combat the pandemic, Health Director-General Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said.

Of the 40, nine cases were infected more than two weeks after the second dose and 31 cases less than two weeks after the second inoculation, Dr Noor Hisham posted on his social media.

On top of that, 142 healthcare workers were infected after the first dose.

“More importantly all had less severe symptoms. It is clear that we still can be infected after completion of  vaccination but perhaps less in severity. No one is safe until everyone is safe. Please continue to comply to all the precautionary public health measures,” Dr Noor Hisham wrote.

Under the Covid-19 National Immunisation Plan, healthcare workers are among the first to receive the Covid-19 vaccines.

Based on global studies, it is not uncommon for those who had been vaccinated to still contract Covid-19, but they tend to suffer less severe symptoms.
